[China-Indonesia News] China and Indonesia Jointly Establish an Animation and Gaming R&D Center
Indonesia’s Minister of Culture recently attended the unveiling ceremony of the China–India Joint Research and Development Center for Animation and Video Games in Shanghai, marking a new phase in bilateral digital cultural cooperation that focuses on animation, game development, cultural intellectual property, talent cultivation, research innovation, and the coordinated development of the cultural and creative industries. The establishment of the center is elevating bilateral collaboration from traditional cultural exchanges to a model of co-creation, shifting the focus from mere exchange of works to joint creation and integrated R&D and production. Together, the two countries will incubate original IPs, technological breakthroughs, and high-quality cultural and creative works, with the aim of exporting content to global markets. He noted that over the 76 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China–India cooperation has long been underpinned by historical ties, trade, diplomacy, and people-to-people exchanges; going forward, however, it will be driven by a new generation of creative professionals—including animators, game developers, designers, and digital entrepreneurs—thereby broadening the scope of collaboration.

[Indonesian News] Prabowo Emphasizes the Strategic Importance of the Indonesian Straits
At a recent cabinet meeting, President Prabowo pointed out that the turmoil in the Strait of Hormuz has starkly underscored the profound impact that critical shipping lanes have on global trade and energy prices. He further emphasized that Indonesia, too, possesses irreplaceable geostrategic value, serving as the lifeline of East Asia’s energy supply. He highlighted that roughly 70% of East Asia’s energy demand passes through Indonesian waters, with key waterways such as the Strait of Malacca, the Sunda Strait, and the Makassar Strait playing a vital role for economies including South Korea, Japan, China, and the Philippines. Indonesia is not only a major geographic power but also a central hub in the region’s energy and trade supply chains.

[Indonesian News] Indonesia Plans to Impose Additional Taxes on Cross-Border E-Commerce Goods from China
The Finance Minister is currently examining a policy to impose additional tariffs on Chinese-made products sold online, given that Chinese imports overwhelmingly dominate Indonesia’s domestic e-commerce platforms, severely undermining the local real economy. Following consultations with micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises on multiple occasions, he has confirmed that the rapid expansion of cross-border e-commerce has dramatically squeezed the operating space for offline retailers, prompting plans to introduce more targeted, tactical measures. Initially, he had assumed that Indonesia’s e-commerce market was primarily driven by local players; however, field research revealed that a substantial share is controlled by foreign sellers, with Chinese goods standing out in particular. He pointed out that while digital platforms appear to facilitate trade, they in fact create convenient entry points for foreign products to capture market share, resulting in significant profits flowing overseas. This trade pattern is unsustainable and calls for a thorough reassessment of relevant policies.

[China-Indonesia News] China Says India-U.S. Trade Cooperation Should Not Harm Third Parties
Indonesian President Prabowo recently met with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington and formally signed a Reciprocal Trade Agreement, under which the two countries reached multiple consensuses on trade and investment cooperation. In response, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated the fundamental principles governing economic and trade cooperation. According to the terms of the agreement, Indonesia will adopt import-restrictive measures—such as tariffs, quotas, and bans—that are equivalent in effect to those imposed by the United States, and will also, at the request of the U.S., take countermeasures against so-called unfair trade practices by enterprises operating in Indonesia that are controlled by third countries. At the same time, the United States has eliminated import tariffs on Indonesian textiles and apparel through a tariff-quota mechanism; additionally, Indonesia’s exports of 1,819 product categories—including palm oil, coffee, semiconductors, and aircraft parts—are eligible for tariff exemptions of up to 0%.
