Celebrating Eid al-Adha and Indonesia’s Independence Day: China–Indonesia Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone Donates Gifts to Local Villagers
On August 8, the enterprises jointly operating in the cooperation zone donated supplies and funds to Nagasari Village, where the zone is located, to celebrate together the Eid al-Adha of the Islamic calendar year 1440 and the 74th anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence Day.
More than 85% of Indonesia’s population is Muslim. According to Indonesian tradition, on Eid al-Adha Muslims dress in new clothes, slaughter livestock—cattle, sheep, and camels—and distribute the meat not only to their own families but also to the poor, without selling any of it, so that every Muslim has a share of the meat. The festive atmosphere is comparable to the Chinese New Year. As businesses operating in and around Nagasari Village, it is standard practice for the Cooperation Zone and its resident enterprises to give back to the local community. On major local holidays such as Eid al-Adha, Eid al-Fitr, and Independence Day, these companies donate supplies to the community. In addition, the Cooperation Zone periodically partners with other enterprises to organize a series of “Children’s Hope Education” initiatives. Whenever natural disasters such as floods or earthquakes strike, the Cooperation Zone and its resident firms actively mobilize donations of money and goods to support disaster victims in their recovery and reconstruction efforts.
While the Cooperation Zone and the enterprises located within it have achieved their own development, they have also made substantial contributions to the local economic and social development. To date, the Cooperation Zone has cumulatively paid over US$90 million in taxes and fees to the local government, and it provides year-round employment for more than 3,000 people, significantly alleviating the challenge of job scarcity faced by a portion of the local workforce.
